Core Programs
Since its opening in 1998, Cranaleith Spiritual Center has welcomed and served nearly 35,000 guests through its non-denominational program offerings and spirit-rekindling environment of hospitality, respect and trust. Cranaleith provides services through five Core Programs:
Spiritual Retreats and Spiritual Direction: Themed day, evening and overnight programs that provide support and safe space for those discovering, probing or nurturing the spiritual issues and relationships at the heart of life. Special emphasis is placed on connecting people of vastly different circumstances in an atmosphere of mutuality and respect. Personal spiritual accompaniment is available to those seeking to deepen the spiritual dimension of life.
Human Service Staff Development: Customized program days for leadership and staff of regional human service organizations to help address the stress and other demands of their humanitarian work through reflection, dialogue and exploration of relevant issues. Through these days of respite and renewal, staff members can re-animate their spirits, own and internalize their mission, grow in a shared vision, and deepen a sense of solidarity and mutuality as a team. Their involvement in visioning and planning, their sharing of triumphs and concerns, their invitation to name sources of pain and joy… builds a cohesive sense of commitment to their organizations and clients. Cranaleith can facilitate these sessions or merely host them, but in either case the hospitality is equal!
Wellness Days: Formal and informal retreat opportunities for marginalized men and women receiving support from human service agencies as they deal with homelessness, abuse, mental illness, poverty and other trauma. Through a guided process of reflection, dialogue and response, we seek to awaken spiritual resources that foster self-esteem, hope, dignity and peace. Exercises draw on metaphor to tap imagination, creativity and resilience. With growing recognition of the importance of spirituality in the healing process, Cranaleith is viewed by our partners as playing an essential role in the continuum of social services.
Garden Wisdom: An annual six-month (April to September) eco-therapy program that brings together the homeless, those suffering from addictions and chronic mental illness, and volunteers from the community. Under the guidance of a clinical social worker and a Master Gardener, the participants are involved in planning, planting, tending and harvesting Cranaleith’s garden. Access to natural beauty in a safe, nurturing environment provides an atmosphere conducive to healing, dignity and respect. Some of this year’s participants include friends from Bethesda Project, St. John’s Hospice and CATCH (Citizens Acting Together Can Help).
Work & Spirit: Uniquely designed programs led by professional facilitators that enable business leaders to respond to the challenges they face and reflect on their work, life, values and opportunities to make contributions to society. See upcoming Work & Spirit programs here.
